Amplifying Education for 22 million K-12 Students in the United States
Client:
Amplify Education, formerly owned by News Corp. and purchased by Laureen Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective in 2015 is a Brooklyn, New York based startup that collaborates with educators and technologists to create rigorous and riveting learning experiences for all students.
"We don’t have to accept the world that we’re born into as something that is fixed and impermeable."
Laureen Powell Jobs
Role:
As Associate Producer, my role was to coordinate with a team of Executives, Stakeholders, Project Managers, Creative Directors, Instructional Designers, Subject Matter Experts, Animators, Graphic Designers, Production Companies, and Development Vendors to plan, develop, build, QA, and iterate over 32 English Language Arts and College and Career Readiness eLearning modules that contained both live action and animation videos.
Problem:
Digital devices were becoming much more common in the classroom landscape circa 2013. Students who spent any amount of time on cell phones, iPads, and digital devices were beginning to show signs of struggle with traditional textbook based materials. In addition, many school districts were facing post-recessionary budget cut reductions that made bringing in new physical textbooks and materials financially difficult. In effort to create efficiencies in how education was being delivered, Amplify sought to meet students where they were, on digital devices. It was and still is a compelling and amiable challenge to push the limits of what is considered "normal" in K-12 education to provide students with a more contemporary learning experience.
Solution:
As an individual contributor, I created UX/UI design mockups and functional wireframes. I wrote content, drafted storyboards, and produced digital assets in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere. I coordinated and interfaced with design, live-action, and animation production companies to manage creation and delivery of digital assets and ensured asset codecs, filetypes, resolutions, technical specifications, and volume levels were consistent. I worked with outside vendors to assemble modules in Adobe Captivate and thoroughly inspected products to ensure functional accuracy and consistency with company brand. I completed regressions, QA testing, and organized bug logs. I also configured and uploaded eLearning modules to Amazon Web Services S3 and Cloudfront.
Results:
In collaboration with a fantastic team of colleagues, we managed to finish the project on time and budget. Below are a few example screenshots from the modules, and here is a link to a live prototype of a JustInMind high fidelity prototype. Please note that the prototype will open in a new window and does not work on mobile devices.
